Making GIFs

So, today I started working on GIFs. I know, I should have done it BEFORE finishing and uploading the game and not now, but to be honest - it seemed like something so complicated and so far-off thing that I couldn not have been bothered to deal with them before I was done with my game.

So, I followed David Wehle's instructions in the Game Dev Unlocked video lecture and it was just half as bad. Well, actually, it wasn't bad at all, it was just half as complicated. Video recording tool OBS was easy to use - there are some quirks but the entry level is really easy - and ezgif.com is a childs play.

The most complicated aspect was - as always - the so-called 'human factor' or me. Meaning - most complicated was to record the right parts of Man Off Mars and to do it the way it would look from one side just interesting, but would also tell the viewer something about the game itself and about the gameplay.

But after several attempts I finally got something. Of course I had to throw away several minutes of recorded gameplay and do the same shots couple of times over but in the end I think I got something... And whats even more surprising - I started to like it. I like how easy and interesting ezgif.com is to use and how I can stress differents aspects of my game by just recording different stuff - be it something showing what's the gameplay is about or just concentrating on the atmosphere of Man Off Mars.

Making GIFs is - relatively - easy! And can be fun. I was really pointlessly afraid that it's some kind of compulsory grind a budding indie game dev just has to make, no matter what, to be a real dev at all, but it's really something that let's me think of different ways of talking to the audience about my game and it's also something that lets me see my very own game in a different and even unexpected light.
